2016 Yonsei Scholarship Winners

Congratulations to Shaye Uyematsu, Lindsay Masukawa (pictured with Yonsei President Jim Matsushita), Danielle Yang and Zachary Ishimoto…recipients of this year’s Yonsei Scholarships

Sue Kamiyama Scholarship – Danielle Yang

Danielle graduated from La Canada High School with a 3.8 unweighted GPA. She will be attending UC Berkeley.

Danielle participated in numerous community service activities, including her involvement with the HELPS Guatemalan Medical Mission where she served as a translator and assistant helping under-privileged locals; supported various activities at the Elizabeth House – a Women’s Shelter in Pasadena; assisted with the Go For Broke National Education Center Hanashi Oral History Project interviewing Veterans; and participating in many community service activities with the Girl Scouts, New Life Christian Church, and Pasadena Bruins.

Danielle has been active in preparing and publishing the La Canada High’s Literary Arts Magazine, and as a participant in the Rising Stars Youth Leadership Program, where she was on the Publicity Committee designing newspaper ads and flyers for fundraising events.

Yonsei General Scholarship – Zachary Ishimoto

Zachary graduated from Palos Verdes Peninsula High School with a 3.9 unweighted GPA. He will be attending the University of Southern California, pursuing a degree in Business Administration.

Zachary served as President of Novas of the Torrance Memorial Medical Center, a non-profit organization comprised of 82 local high school students that coordinated fundraising and social events to benefit the hospital. In 2015, they raised over $27,000. He is involved with the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and is a Walk for Life Ambassador. Zachary was the Fundraising Chair for both organizations.

In addition to his academic accomplishments anchors of community service, he has been active in numerous school and community organizations, including the Peninsula High PLUS (Peer Leaders Uniting Students) Leadership Program that oversees forums to address campus concerns of students and staff, South Bay Community Church, the Aquarium of the Pacific, and the Go For Broke Organization.

Zachary was Captain of the Cross Country Team and a member of the Track and Field Team at Peninsula High.

Yonsei General Scholarship Funded by AMNET – Shaye Uyematsu

Shaye graduated from Canyon High School with a 3.9 unweighted GPA. She will be attending California State University, Fullerton, pursuing a degree in Education.

Shaye earned her Girl Scout Silver Award, with her project requiring numerous hours to provide cooked meals for the Ronald McDonald House and her Gold Award Project that provided dresses sewn from pillow cases sent to Uganda. She took part in numerous community service projects as an Orange Coast Optimist Octagon, including preparing and delivering Thanksgiving baskets to families in need, canned food drives, and various fundraisers. She volunteered her time for the Orange County Buddhist Church, Canyon Beautification, and Canyon Youth Basketball Camp. Shaye was active in various school and community organizations, including the Comanche’s Care (Varsity Athlete’s Service Group), California Scholarship Federation, Canyon Youth Basketball Program, Canyon High Girl’s Basketball Varsity Team Captain, Orange Coast Optimist Octagons, OCBC Girl Scouts, and the Fujima Seyumi Kai (Odori – Japanese Dancing).

Yonsei General Scholarship Funded by Kiboh Giving Circle – Lindsay Masukawa

Lindsay graduated from Cypress High School with a 4.0 unweighted GPA. She will be attending UCLA to pursue a degree in Biology (Pre-Med).

Lindsay earned her Girl Scout Gold Award by establishing a sustainable STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) Program to help educated third graders at the local Boys and Girls Club. She volunteered in numerous service projects at senior citizen homes, with underprivileged children, and for the homeless; she also volunteers hours for the South Bay FOR Junior Sports Association.

Lindsay was the Senior President of the Associated Student Body, and the National Honor Society, the California Scholarship Federation Community Service Coordinator/Lead, the Cypress High Girls Basketball Varsity Team Captain, and held various leadership roles for the Girl Scouts.
