Working with our Yonsei 24 players and preparing them for their Goodwill tour to Matsue, Japan are Boy’s Head Coach Dayn Araki and Girl’s Head Coach Allison Taka. Their assistant coaches are Ryan Lee and Melanie Schmitz.
Dayn Araki has coached basketball for the past nine years at Foothill High School; three years as an Assistant Freshman Coach, three years as a JV Head Coach, and three years as a Varsity Assistant Coach. He was part of the 2010 and 2015 CIF Champions coaching staff at Foothill High School. Dayn traveled to Tamana with Yonsei 18 and to Fukuoka with Yonsei 20, both as the Assistant Coach.
Dayn played basketball for Wintersburg Presbyterian Church from middle school through high school; and has coached various Wintersburg youth teams. He played four years of high school basketball at Foothill High School.
Allison Takai began playing basketball at the age of seven for the Venice Youth Council (VYC). She attended Culver City High School, where she played on the varsity team for four years, later continuing her playing career at UCLA, where she was named to the First Team All-Pac 10 Academic Squad. She is currently the academic advisor for UCLA’s Bioinformatics Ph.D. program.
Over the years, Alli has had the opportunity to coach many wonderful teams, including stops as VYC and two years as an Assistant Varsity Coach for Culver City High School. She joined the Yonsei family in 2012, serving as an Assistant Coach for Yonsei 19 (Shimane), and most recently was Head Coach for Yonsei 22 (Sakata).
Ryan Lee was a member of the Yonsei 10 team. He is a graduate of UC San Diego with a Bachelors of Arts in Communication. Since then he has been working for a non-profit organization that runs program for at-risk high school students. He has been coaching at his alma mater, South Pasadena High School and is currently the JV Coach.
His passion for the game of basketball has spurred him to establish NYABC – Not Your Average Basektball Camp, a safe space for players with special needs to explore their interest in basketball.
Melanie Schmitz is a graduate of West Torrance High School, where she played basketball and volleyball. She played with the FOR Panthers and also participated in the North-South games. She has assisted the West Torrance Varsity and JV Girls Basketball coaches in the past, with their practices.
Melanie has her Bachelors in Nursing and currently works at Torrance Memorial Medical Center in the Emergency Department as a registered nurse. She is currently studying for her Masters in Nursing at UC Irvine.
