Friends of Yonsei:
I hope that you and your families are doing well and looking forward to getting back to “normal” very soon.
Thank you for your continued support as we postponed our current program and travel plans in 2020 and 2021. We have strived to remain active in the community with various volunteer projects as our teams prepare for next steps as it becomes safe to do so, following State, County, and CDC Guidelines.
Here is an update on our teams:
Yonsei 26 Team: Our organization has been in contact with this team’s host city, Shibata. They have determined they cannot visit us this summer, but are looking forward to a 2022 Los Angeles visit.
Yonsei 27 Team: Their trip to Japan has been delayed from 2020, but we remain optimistic about travel next year. During this past year, the Y27 team has been active with creative Zoom team meetings which have ranged from interactive cooking demos to competitive team building projects.
Yonsei 28 Team: It seems prudent to delay the recruitment of this team of current 8th graders until we are able to hold meetings in person. At this time, we do not have enough information about when this might be possible. We remain in constant communication with our partners in Japan about their ability to receive our team as well.
While we do not have a definite date for recruitment or know what the actual program will look like in the future, our best estimate is that we will start the selection process in the 3rd quarter of 2021. If you are a current 8th grader and are interested in applying to our Y28 team, we recommend that candidates save a copy of their 8th grade year end report card and obtain contact information for who they may ask for the required two letters of recommendation.
If you are a current 7th grader or 8th grader and are interested in being contacted when we have more information about the selection process for our Yonsei 28 and/or Yonsei 29 team, please click on this link https://tinyurl.com/YonseiContact and fill in your contact information. If you have any specific questions, please feel free to reach out to me at firstname.lastname@example.org .
Finally, we remain optimistic that we will be able to host our Exhibition Game and Annual Golf Tournament around the October/November 2021 time frame. We will send out information as it becomes available.
During this past year, we have received a tremendous amount of support and we are grateful to you, our Yonsei friends, as we work to get our program back on schedule.

The Yonsei Basketball Association is a non-profit organization founded in 1993 by a group of Southern California Japanese Americans interested in establishing a cultural exchange program for middle school-aged youth, using basketball as the vehicle. Today, the organization strives to provide eighth-grade boys and girls the opportunity to experience the Japanese heritage and cultural roots firsthand by coordinating their travel to prominent cities in Japan. Participants take part in a goodwill exchange by way of playing basketball and taking part in a home stay experience, learning and sharing the two cultures. As a result, lifelong friendships and experiences are developed.
